I decided to make the optional shims for the skybolt brackets. I am not sure that I will be using them but won't know until I cut the excess material from the aft edge of the cowling. The shims provide a tolerance for the variable thickness of Vans cowling layup. The Showplanes cowl seems to be substantially more uniform at .050". Once I trim the cowling back a bit, I should have a much better idea. I do not want to use the shim if it means I have to shim the finished cowl out the same thickness as the shim moves it in...
Fabricate .015" x 1/2" shims for the perimeter of the firewall flange.
Shear 1/2" wide strips and debur.
Match drill to firewall flange, cleco as drilled.
Remove all clecos.
Debur and dimple all holes.
Cleco skybolt bracket and shim to firewall flange.
