Brief Description:  Install Main Gear Leg Stiffeners

1236 - 1412 1506 - 1606

Much discussion on the forums about a main gear leg vibration on landing. I decided to install the gear leg stiffeners which recommended by Vans on some models. These stiffeners amount to tapered wood pieces epoxied to the gear legs and wrapped with two layers of 9 oz f/g cloth.

With the gear fairings in place, the stiffeners were located on the legs and marked.

The aft wheel pant needed to be relieved for the stiffener so this area was marked as well.

Remove all fairings.

Trim stiffener to length.

Tape stiffener to gear leg, install all fairings and verify fit.

Remove all fairings.

Clean and prep gear leg and stiffener for bonding.

Mix epoxy/flox/cabo and applt to stiffener.

Install stiffener to gear leg and secure with tape.

Remove excess epoxy.

Repeat for other gear leg.

Relieve aft wheel pant to facilitate clearance from the stiffener using permagrit tools and s/p.

Apply an additional layer of 9 ounce f/g cloth around the area that was removed for strength and durability.
