Brief Description:  Modify Nose Gear Fork for Wheel Pant Bolt

1518 - 1748

Due to the continued installation and removal of the wheel pant bracket bolt, the aluminum threads began to gall, even with lubricant. This is a weak point in this design; threading a hard steel bolt into soft aluminum threads isn't a really good idea. This has been discussed at length on the forums. The general solution is to use a helicoil in the aluminum threads. This was attempted with unsatifactory results. Unless a special locking helicoil is used, the coil tends to thread out of the aluminum each time the bolt is installed. Considering the aluminum is only 5/16" thick, this does not leave very many threads engaged. I opted to fabricate what amounts to a large nut plate from a 3/8" Tee nut and a piece of 040 aluminum sheet. This nut plate was then riveted to the nose fork to set it's position and prevent rotation.

The fabrication process was straight forward and will not be detailed here.
