So I worked on this yesterday and it was very frustrating. Once the airplane is level, the wheel pant must be held in a specific position in space but there are no straight lines on the wheel pant. I tried it Van's way and every time I would block up the fairing, it would end up sliding down and was nearly impossible to maintain a position in space. So I found a better solution.
I spent a couple of hours yesterday building a jig to hold the aft pant in position. I can now clamp theaft pant to the weighted jig and position it wherever I need to...and it will stay put.
Today I trimmed the pants more and finally positioned the pant satifactorily. Per plans, it it level with the airplane, parallel in roll with the tire, and paralllel to the airplane center line.
I fabricated a 1/4" aluminum shim for the aft bracket to prevent having to try and bend it that far.
