Brief Description:  Install Instrument Panel

1200 - 1418 1500 - 1718

First thing today, I installed the mounting ring for the GMU22 using Black Brass hardware that was received this afternoon.

Next, I began mounting the transponder. Everything looked really good, including the harness length, until I attempted to put the transponder in it's tray. When I fabricated it for the presumed shorter length harness, the instrument sub panel was not installed. Now that it is, there is a problem. There is insufficient room to get the transponder into it's tray due to the vertical subpanel support. After a short time analyzing it, the solution was apparent.

I had to completely remove the previously install rack tray. This involved removing the wiring connectors from the GEA24 and removing the GEA24 from the rack tray. Next, I needed to remove the bolts securing the rack tray to the standoffs. Once this was accomplished, I removed the rack tray from the aircraft.

I measured the clearnce that was required and space available several times. Now that the new location for the transponder tray was known, I removed the rivets securing the transponder tray supports. The supports were relocated and new rivets were installed.

The new rack tray was installed and fit was verified.

The rack tray was then installed. First, the rack tray was positioned beneath the stand offs. The GEA24 was then installed on the rack rack tray. The rack tray was then attached to the standoffs.

The new transponders location was verified again for fit and clearance.

I then reattached the GEA24 connectors.

Next, I installed a BNC connector on the transponder antenna RG400. The BNC connector was then attached to the transponder tray connector. The tray connector was then installed on the transponder tray.

The transponder tray was then installed on the rack tray and the antenna wire was routed.

The final task today was to install the TNC and BNC connectors on the respective cables. The cables were then connected to the GTN650 tray connector.
