Brief Description:  Install GPS and XM Antenns

1500 - 1706

Today I worked on installing the GPS and XM antennas.

After some research and several phone calls to installers and Garmin, I decided to fabricate two ground plane doublers for the antennas. The Garmin manuals present conflicting data. They say that a ground plane is not required but in the very next paragraph, they recommend one with a minimum diameter of 8". A reputable installer indicated that the ground plane is not necessary for these antennas, and had numerous examples of flying aircraft experiencing no issues. Given the conflicting data, and really no downside, I fabricated two 8" ground plane doublers from 032 aluminum.

The antennas were then installed and secured with SS hardware.

Next, I installed a BNC and two TNC connectors on the previously installed RG400 cable using a ratcheting crimper with the proper dies. Each cable was double checked for center pin isolation prior to installation.
