Brief Description:  Prepare Engine for First Start

1030 - 2100

Today, we began by installing the prop.

The ring gear and alternator belt were installed. The prop was supported by an engine lift and the captive bolts were tightened evenly. The AeroSplat prop wrench was worth every penny! The bolts were properly torqued. The alternator was then tightened per the Band C instructions. Unfortunately, we could not achieve the required pulley slip torque. Upon further inspection, we found that the intake plenum was interfering with the alternator. The solution was to use a shorter belt, Gates XL 7355. It is an inch shorter and the parts store had one in stock. This required to prop to be removed.

The prop was then removed and the new belt installed. The prop was then reinstalled and torqued.

The captive prop bolts were then safety wired.

The front spinner plate was then installed and cap screws torqued. They wer then safety wired.

The spinner was installed and the cowling installed to verify fit. This was the first time the prop and cowl were installed together. The resulting spinner to cowl gap was a nominal 1/4" which is what was planned.

The next task was to "preoil" the engine. According to Barrett's recommedation, the top plugs were removed and the engine turned by hand. We were to see oil pressure...we did not. A call to Barrett. They recommended turning the engine with the starter, which we did. It appeared that the needle on the gauge was fluctuating but no measurable oil pressure was noted. We then installed an analog gauge in the oil pressure line. Same result. We then loosened the fittings on the oil pickup line to see if there was oil there...there was. To be on the safe side, we decided to drain all of the oil from the engine and remove the pickup line to make sure it was clear. While the oil was draining we verified all hose connections were correct. We removed the oil filter supply line and it had some oil in it. The only way for that line to have oil in it at this point was for the pump to put it there. Once the oil was drained we m
