Brief Description:  Install Instrument Panel

1530 - 1848

Today I worked on the roll servo wiring. I determined the required length of the roll servo wiring, marked and cut them. The wires were then prepared, and a shield braid extension was soldered using a parallel twist splice. An 8 pin Deutsch connector was then installed.

The remaining piece of the servo wiring was then routed from the DB15 connector behind the panel to the wing root area. The wires were passed through the previously installed grommet.

The mating Deutsch connector was then installed on this wiring. The behind panel DB15 connector was joined and secured..

I then installed 3 pin Deutsch connectors on the aileron trim motors wiring in both wings. This was required for autotrim. The roll servo provides motor control for the aileron trim servo. The trim servo, in my application, is in the left wing per Van's plans.

NOTE: If I were building again, I would locate the aileron trim servo in the RIGHT wing, making the roll servo/trim servo wiring much easier.

Next, I installed the right instrument panel insert. This required reinstalling the panel and flood light wiring into the respective controllers. The ELT test switch Molex connector was then attached.

I then secured the CF insert panel using 6-32 Torx screws.

I decided to fabricate a small conduit through the tunnel walls to pass the aileron trim servo motor wires through. I opted to use a piece of nylon conduit and two plastic bushings. The conduit was secured in the bushings using E6000 adhesive. The location if the conduit was determined by operating the flaps from stop to stop. The final location was chosen above the elevator pushrod but below the flap torque tube arm. This will facilitate routing wires from on side to the other if necessary, and the conduit has adequate size for any future wiring.
