Brief Description:  Start circuit

Start circuit.

Today I finished drawing the start circuit.

I'm using separate magneto switches, a grossly over priced TCM starter vibrator (similar to the SlickStart) and the TCW Tech SmartStart for security and ground safety. The SmartStart incorporates a momentary switch to arm the starter for 1 minute and an airswitch to re-arm the system above 40kts. The SmartStart can also accomodate an optional interlock switch to prevent inadvertent engine start without, for example, the canopy being locked shut.

The circuit would be simpler with a rotary start switch (which takes care of grounding the right magneto, energising the starter vibrator to the retard and advance breakers), but I like having separate magnetor switches. This just requires a few SPST relays connected to the starter button.

It took while to get my head around this little circuit, but the book 'The ABCs of the Bendix Shower of Sparks Ignition System' was a great guide. When I thought everything was right, I went ahead and wired the circuit on the bench to test everything out.

I also thought it was impossible to hand swing an engine fitted with the starter vibrator, but there is a simple procedure ! In fact, I could have used this procedure yesterday at Temora, when my mate's aircraft battery ran down after a few failed starts. I might build a folding safety handle into the forward fuselage in case some poor bunny has to hand crank the big six engine!
