Brief Description:  02 - Rear skirts

Rear skirts

I drilled the additional holes in through the canopy and bow, countersunk and blind riveted so I could remove all the clecos. I then taped each hole ready for match drilling the rear skirts. The plans call for drawing lines out from the centre of the holes to a distance marker, but I found it more useful to put three holes in an 0.063" strip, cleco one in the hole to replicate, then trace inside the othe two holes that will be used to re-align later. When that was done I drew distance markers 3/8" from the holes to ensure I had the right edge distance with the skirt in place.

I trimmed the skirt, polished the edges, then shaped it by hand until it matched the turtle deck. I pulled the canopy back until the rear bow was raised approximately 1/4", taped the skirt in place and began match drilling from the centre out. I then trimmed the skirt perpendicular to the upper edge of the side skirt and trimmed the junction on both sides. While I had the side skirt off, I marked the rear skirt where the pin passes to ensure enough room to squeeze the rivets on the doubler plate. Then I made the doubler plate and that side is done. UHMW tape on the underside will make it just a tiny bit tighter, so it should be perfect.

Apparently this is one of the most frustrating parts of the kit, but I don't know what all the fuss is about ... maybe I'll find out on the other side !
