Just for something different, James and I decided to laminate one of the gear leg stiffeners out of straigh-grained hoop pine purchased for this purpose. I also decided to sandwich three layers of 400gsm twill weave carbon fibre between the timbers to improve the fore/aft stiffness, so we set about coarse sanding, laying up and clamping the parts.
When this sets there will be quite a lot of trimming and shaping to match the profiled titanium gear legs while also fitting inside the fibreglass gear leg fairings. I plan to incorporate a groove at the leading edge to carry a sleeve for the brake line as well. When that's done we can bond the stiffeners to the gear legs, probably with ProSeal, then wrap both parts together with unidirectional carbon fibre.
