I continued to trim the edges of the shelf, then mounted an attach bracket at the rear bulkhead and a low profile stiffener below that. More trimming is required yet, but I don't want to over-cut and leave an unsightly gap along the sides. I'll finish the edge with pinch-seal and overlay with black fire-resistant marine carpet the same as the glare shield.
