I moved the smoke oil filter down to a lower level so that it's more likely to self-prime under gravity feed from the tank, then started a flexible line through the bulkhead to the pipe up to the ball valve. Without a shutoff valve the system would tend to gravity leak fluid through to the exhaust pipe.
