Since I was already using epoxy, I layed up a carbon fibre tube on a waxed and PVA'd nlyon rod. When that sets, I'll turn it smooth in the lathe and remove it from the rod for fitting to the tip. I may yet bullet the front some more with epoxy & Aerosil, but one step at a time.
