Brief Description:  Van's practice elevator kit

Van's practice elevator kit

I learned quite a lot from this inexpensive kit. At first, I didn't understand why I should make the accessories described in the kit (the instructions aren't very detailed in this respect), but it soon became obvious why you need some pretty small dimpling accessories (dimpling bucking bar etc). I wasn't happy with the result from the Van's suggested design, so I'll be making a new bucking bar especially to fit into the tight space between the trailing edge skins. I also made a dimple die holder to hammer dimples into the confined space where neither the squeezer or 'pop-rivet' style dimplers will fit.

This was a lot of fun, but I was in a great rush and got the top and bottom skins reversed. It didn't seem to be a problem until I noticed the trailing edges weren't flush because the rivet holes in the top of the rib flanges are slightly further forward than the holes along the bottom. I also learned how fussy you need to be trying to bend the curves, but they're doable.
