Bushfire relief at Zig Zag Railway
Today we gave up some blood, sweat and tears to help clean up the Zig Zag railway near Lithgow after the fires. Removing spent steam train coke from between the railway ballast rocks wasn't exactly bushfire related, but it's all time saving for the permanent volunteer workforce.
Nothing but the sharp end of a pick penetrates these rocks, which all had to be removed with the ash, then replaced by hand. The shovels were only useful for scraping the rocks off the sleepers, not from between them. We also loaded a 14 ton skip with steel ... good exercise.
