I used carburettor cleaner to clean the face of the lifter piston, then JB Welded a stainless rod onto it that would later become a 'dent-puller'. The JB Weld held surprisingly well for such a small area, but alas it wasn't enough to break the grip of the rust. More thinking to be done.
