I ripped out the rough drywall frame around the old square accessway to the attic, installed a new joist cross-member and nailing headers, and then closed the old accessway opening with new sheetrock. Once the hole was closed, I filled the space with R-30 Fiberglas insulation, covered the floor with more Attic Dek panels, and taped and mudded the drywall joints and screw heads. Next weekend, I'll sand and paint the new drywall patch to make it blend in with the rest of the garage ceiling.
