Brief Description:  Rivet Rear Spar Assembly & Hinge Brackets

Tonight I assembled the rear spar components, riveting the doubler and hinge brackets, and attaching the inboard hinge bracket assembly with screws. The doubler rivets proved especially challenging to set, and I had to drill out and replace about 7 of the 34 AN470AD4-6 rivets. Minor shifting of the pneumatic squeezer proved difficult to control with the longer AD4-6 rivets. However, the bad rivets were removed easily without damaging the rivet holes, and replacement rivets set perfectly after much more careful attention to a straight, smooth setting process, greatly facilitated by carefully teasing the trigger of the squeezer very slowly during each set. Once the replacement doubler rivets were set, I set the AN470AD4-5 rivets on the hinge brackets, which installed easily. Then I mounted the clecoed inboard hinge bracket to the spar with AN3 bolts, washers, and 10-32 lock nuts, carefully torquing each nut to 22 in-lbs and applying anti-sabotage lacquer to the nuts and threads of the installed fasteners. After the bracket was mounted flat to the spar, I set the six AN470AD4-6 rivets around the perimeter of the bearing. These rivets, unlike the same sized doubler rivets, installed easily with the pneumatic squeezer.
