The alodine is a conversion layer, not a coating in the typical sense. It is important that the surface be clean prior to application. The Alodine assures good paint adhesion as well as providing corrosion protection. Alodine also exhibits a self-healing property, that when subjected to light scratches can still protect the aluminum. After rinsing after deoxidizing, the parts are immersed in the Alodine tank. Our immersion times are based upon the results of the panels we submit for a 338 hour salt spray chamber test each month. Normally the immersion time is between 1.0 to 1.5 minutes. After Alodine I rinsed again and then dryed in a low temp dryer prior to paint. If you decide to do your own Alodining, keep in mind the it is a hazardous chemical that contains ferrocynanide and hexavalent chromium. This is not something you want laying around your garage.
