Brief Description:  Finish riveting Trim Tab

I riveted the trim tab spar to skin. This was a bit of a challenge. I ordered the longeron yoke from Avery Tools to do this, but even with this it was difficult. Here again I checked multiple builder sites. Some used long offset rivet set and back riveted the spar, but I decided to give it a try with the longeron yoke. I also had to use different sizes of rivet sets as I progressed down the tapered spar. In the end all rivets were set to spec and they looked great.

Next, I positioned the trim tab per the drawing with min of 3/32 gap between trim tab and elevator. In fact I increased the gap by 1/32 to 1/8in just to make sure. With the outboard edge of the tab set at 1/8 inch, the inboard edge does not line up exactly with the inboard edge of the elevator and is closer inboard by about 1/8 inch. The trim tab bends look exactly correct so the only thing that could have been done was to have the elevator tabs bent a just a bit further outboard. The result of this is that the push rod for the trim tab will have a slight offset but as long as the full motion of the servo has no tight spots, it should be acceptable. I’ll check that when the servo/push rod is completed.

Next I used the dimensions on the drawing to do layout the position of the Z brackets on the trim cover. The dimensions looked correct so I marked the cover and then positioned double sided tape using the marks and positioned the brackets to the tape. I put this assembly in the elevator to check alignment before drilling brackets to cover. Once drilled, I removed brackets, deburred then re installed with clecoes and flush riveted brackets to cover. Then I fastened the servo to the brackets, installed in the elevator and using a 12 V cordless battery, checked travel of the servo. Works great.
