Brief Description:  Bending elevator tab

OK, the day has finally arrived that I needed to bend the dreaded tabs. I researched this a lot in other builder’s web page. I finally took a little bit from all and created my own method. I first cut the outside wedge out of cardboard until I got the angle just right. I then transferred this angle to a piece of MDF and cut it out on the band saw. I made the inside wedge in a similar way. I then applied double sided tape to the inside wedge only. Then I clamped the elevator solidly to both work benches (the second one is supporting the inboard end of the elevator). I then inserted the wedge and aligned it with the bend line (moved 1/32 inboard as recommended). I then clecoed in the front and rear elevator spar and clamped the outer wedge solidly to elevator and to work bench. Then with a piece of wood I began bending the bottom tab first (elevator is shown bottom up) I was able to bend both tabs by only using wood bending block and a light hammer taps with wood block. The bottom bend was perfect with a very good 1/32 bend radius. Without moving the whole fixture, I bent the other tab up using same method. In the end the most difficult part was removing the inside wedge. The double sided tape I used was very strong and I don’t think I even needed to move the bend line as recommended
