Brief Description: 1: Trim Motor Wiring
|
|
My goal today was to get the elevator trim motor wired up and working, and I first started at the aft deck. After looking at pictures of my wiring job from a couple days ago I decided I could do better, so re-made the wiring terminations. The wire that goes from the terminal strip to the trim motor still looks a bit sloppy, but I'll fix that when I take the vertical stabliser off, perhaps tomorrow.
Next I fitted a small terminal block under the pilot seat and terminated the wires from the control stick (second picture below), and then the five-core cable that runs from the trim motor.
I temporarily connected a trim position indicator and power supply, turned it on, hit the up/down buttons, and........nothing.
After a bit of troubleshooting it turns out the ground wire had broken off inside the control stick. I pulled it apart and resoldered, and in doing so two other wires also broke. I resoldered those, reassembled the whole thing, and tried again.........works a treat.
This little episode of broken wires has made me feel that the delicate wiring connections in the control stick may be a weak spot in my electrical system. I'm going to leave it for now, but I think I'll end up taking the control off and seeing if I can come up with something more robust. I also hate the idea of losing trim control mid-flight, so am now thinking about a redundant system. Perhaps a second trim switch on the panel somewhere. I'll give this some more thought.
