Brief Description:  2: Panel Switch Lighting

Tonight I tested the panel lights, which didn't go completely to plan at first. I applied power to the relevant VP-X output pin, but nothing. After a little troubleshooting I soon found that I'd left out one wire, and as soon as I'd rectified then bingo! All good.

I've wired the panel lights such that when the switch is turned on then the VP-X output switches on a small relay under the panel. This relay in turn feeds separate +12V supplies to the following:
* trim indicator dim input
* compass internal light
* panel mounted dimmer, which in turn controls brightness of all the panel switches.

The dimmer has been a very good idea (not to mention compulsory for NVFR rating) as the panel switches are way too bright on full voltage. Judging by brightness while sitting in my dark shed, I think I will operate them at around 1/3 power if night flying. They're still plenty bright enough to easily identify each one.

I took the following current readings:
* Maximum brightness 1750mA
* Typical brightness 550mA
* Minimum brightness 450mA

I'll set the VP-X circuit breaker at 2.0 amps

These switches look very nice when lit up, and brightness adjusted down

Full brightness will be too bright. Glad I installed a dimmer
