I discovered a little trap today, when I went to remove the bottom rudder fairing. To get the fairing off I first need to unplug the tail nav/strobe light, but when I went to pull the wiring out I found it was stuck fast. No amount of wriggling would budge the wires, which meant I couldn't get the molex connector outside the rudder to unplug it.
Thankfully the fairing was still only cleco'd in place, so I took out all the cleco's and removed the fairing. It was then that I could see the problem. The connector had wedged itself down in the bottom.
Hmmm, what to do?
I eventually came up with an idea. I shaped a piece of balsa wood to fit down in the problem area, and fixed it in place with some resin. Now the connector cannot fall down into the tight space.
My balsa wood insert, placed in the bottom of the rudder fairing
The molex connector now doesn't get jammed down in the bottom of the fairing
