Brief Description:  3: Rudder Tips

I spent the rest of this fine Monday public-holiday afternoon working on the top and bottom tips for the rudder.

I spent ages contemplating how to cut out the bottom rudder tip. The prefabricated fibreglass piece comes with what appear to be moulded cut-out lines, however the instructions neither make any reference to these lines, nor any reference whatsoever that the tip needs to be cut at all. You're left to work it out for yourself, using your gut feel. I'm guessing Vans make a fortune on resupply of parts that builders have stuffed up because they guessed wrong.

I ended up following my gut feel, and, using a cut-off wheel in my dremel, cut out the bottom rudder tip following the "guidelines" moulded into the fibreglass. This seemed to be a good decision, as it only took a little minor rework to get a nice neat fit happening. Phew!

I'll come back to the bottom tip later, as this needs to be removable (to get at the tail light wiring), and will therefore require nutplates. The drawings only make provision for rivetting in place, so I'll need to order some nutplates of a suitable size (the one's I've got seem too small for my liking).

Next up I then did a similar job with the top rudder tip. This was much easier to "shape" and fit, and, since there's no wiring to worry about in this area, I also went ahead and rivetted it in place (after dimpling/countersinking, of course).
