With a long weekend ahead of me, and some glorious outback weather forecast, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to start my venture into the world of composites. And what better way than to have a crack at fairing my elevator wing tips.
Armed with some fine West System resin products (and user manual), I mixed up about 60 grams of 5:1 resin/hardener mixture in a take-away coffee cup, and added flox until I had a nice stiff mixture. I then applied this to the underside of the left elevator, where the fibreglass tip joins with the elevator skin, and smoothed out as best I could with a plastic scraper.
I now need to leave this to harden, which will be tomorrow, and then sand it back smooth. I'll probably need to apply another couple "coats" as I'm sure there will still be some low spots once it's sanded.
