I was all set for some decent progress on the plane tonight, but ended up getting hardly anywhere due to a previously unknown little gusset piece.
First up I riveted the left counterbalance assembly to the elevator spar. It took some effort to line up the holes, but once done I was able to set the two rivets quite easily.
Okay, I says, what's next?
"Rivet the E-921 gusset".
Er.....What? No mention of the E-921 gusset anywhere in the instructions until now.
I looked over at what's left of the parts on my shelf, and sure enough, I found a tiny little angle piece labelled E-921. I then searched through the plans and found that this piece attaches the left elevator root rib to the trim tab spar. Many builders have made mention of the fact that there's quite a bit of detail missing from the Vans instructions, so I guess this is an example. A bit frustrating, but not the end of the world.
I match drilled the pre-drilled holes and then deoxidised and alodined by simply dipping it straight into my chemical drums.
The previously unknown E-921 gusset
At least it was an easy task to deoxidise and alodine
