Brief Description: 1: Back Riveting the Rudder Stiffeners
|
|
Wow, back-riveting is awesome!
This morning I back-riveted all the rudder stiffeners onto the two skins, and am very pleased with how neat every single rivet turned out. Working on one stiffener at a time, I used rivet tape to hold the complete row of rivets in place. I then flipped the skin over and positioned the stiffener over top of the protruding rivet shanks. With a back-rivet set in the rivet gun, and a heavy steel bar underneath, it's then a simple matter of working your way along the row of rivets, setting them as you go. Very easy, and extremely good results. I wish I could set all the rivets this way.
Reading through another builder's log I also found the idea of starting with the longest stiffener first. That way you can re-use the one length of rivet tape for multiple stiffeners, until it loses tackiness. Rivet tape isn't that expensive, but hey, no point throwing it away.
Time for a coffee break while I admire my work.
