Brief Description:  2: Assembling the Rudder Frame

While I wait for the paint to dry on the stiffeners I thought I'd jump ahead slightly and start assembling the rudder spar, ribs and other bits that make up the frame.

The arrangement of parts at the bottom of the rudder is quite complex, and took a very close study of the drawings before I was comfortable that I knew what went where. I noted that there is some unneccessary confusion added by Vans in this area of the build, as the instructions do not seem to align with the parts provided. There is reference to holes that require drilling, which are already pre-drilled. I studied these confusing steps for quite some time before deciding I could just move on.

The top end of the rudder was a beast to assemble. Getting the small counterweight skin cleco'd in place was extremely difficult, almost as if it were too small. In the end, however, I got it in place and match drilled, so all's well that ends well.

The next step is to cleco the skins to the frame, however I'll need to rivet on the stiffeners first. Something to look forward to for tomorrow :-).
