Brief Description:  Disassemble and deburr

After three days of finishing a bit later than usual at work, I finally had a normal knock-off time tonight and was able to get back into my workshop for a couple hours. After a small time spent admiring the assembled left horizontal stabiliser from my last activity, I then set about pulling the whole thing apart to deburr all #40 holes.

Prior to then starting my first attempt at dimpling, I spent some time reading the appropriate sections of my Standard Aircraft Handbook, and Vans Aircraft construction notes. Doesn't seem too hard. I then found myself a scrap piece of aluminium the same gauge as the wing ribs, drilled a series of #40 holes, and practiced with both my c-frame dimpler, and hand squeezer. OK, so far so good.

It was when I tried to dimple an actual wing rib that I encountered a problem. Although I have a small diameter female dimple die, the frame of both my c-frame, and hand squeezer, prevent me from getting in close enough to the web of the rib to properly form the dimple. Hmmm. Thought I'd leave it there for the night and ponder this one. Might give a couple of my new SAAA friends a call.

UPDATE: SAAA members, Bruce and Patrick, both got back to me with pretty much the same advice. I need to get myself either a set of dimpling pliers, or pop rivet-style dimple dies. I went to Aircraft Tool Supply website and ordered both. Should arrive in 7-8 days.
