Brief Description:  Radio and Joystick Wiring

A couple nights during the week, and most of today, spent on wiring up the VHF radio.

I was going to run a 5-core 26AWG cable from the underfloor radio to the head unit in the instrument panel, but a phone discussion with Jake Jansen at Aero Assist made me change my mind. The very tiny 26AWG wires would only give me trouble, plus he suggested the RS-232 serial comms wires should be screened. Given Jake's years of experience I took his advice.

It was very difficult getting the wires run in, and then terminated into a 25-pin d-sub connector in the underfloor space, but all is done now. I really hope I got all the pin connections right as I do not want to have to go back in here to troubleshoot. Time will tell I guess!

While fiddling around down here I also decided to finish off the wiring to the pilot side joystick. I'd already run all the wires so I just needed to form them into some sort of neat loom and terminate. I also noticed from the Dynon Intercom-2S drawings that I may have wired my Push-To-Talk button incorrectly. I was going to simply connect one side of the button to aircraft ground, but the drawing shows both sides need to go back to the intercom, via the microphone socket wiring. Might have to run in another wire.

The pilot joystick also includes all the wiring for the elevator trim system, so with everything terminated I decided to re-hang the left elevator and test the electrical system. I hooked up my 12VDC power supply and presto, it all worked. Backward initially, but a simple swap of the trim motor wires and all is good. This is the very first electrical system to be powered up in the aeroplane, so pretty happy with that milestone.
