Brief Description:  2: Attaching the Right Aileron

Once the aileron control rods were ready then I decided to attach the right aileron. First I made up a jig to enable me to set the aileron neutral position and bolted it to the outboard rib.

Next I attached the hinge brackets to the aileron spar, before then bolting the aileron up to the wing, which was easier said than done. There's one bolt that's particularly difficult to get in, but as luck would have it, mate Paul called around just at the right time. Two sets of hands then made short work of it.

I spent quite a bit of time setting up the neutral position, but it just didn't seem right. I had a lot of travel in one direction, but very little in the other. Upon closer inspection I realised that I'd used the wrong tooling hole in the outboard rib to attach my aileron neutral position guide, which had a big effect. Once I corrected this then all was good....well, almost.

I noticed that when fully extended the control arm rubbed against the side of the opening in the wing rear spar. I'd read other builder's logs where they had written of the same problem, so this came as no real suprise to me. To fix it I simply enlarged the hole slightly. All good.
