Brief Description:  2: Aileron Control Rods

Second job today was the main aileron control rods. I carefully measured and cut the two supplied aluminium tubes to length, cleaned up the ends, and then set about marking the rivet holes.

I used a tip I found on Smitty's RV-9A website for marking out the six equally spaced holes. He placed a piece of tape around the tube, put a cut in it so that he was left with the tape length being exactly the diameter of the tube, then unpeeled it, laid out flat, and marked the hole locations with a ruler and pen. He then stuck the tape back onto the tube and transferred the markings to the tube. Worked a treat. Thanks Smitty.

After drilling all the rivet holes I then decided that I would fully alodine the aluminium tubes before swishing primer all through them. This took some doing as my poly tube chemical bath was a couple inches short, meaning I couldn't simply fill it with alumibrite/alodine, screw on the cap, and swish it around. Instead I stood the poly pipe up vertically, tied it in place so it wouldn't fall over, then filled it a little over half full with alumibrite. I stood the aluminium tubes inside, then after a minute or so I took them out and put them back in the other way around, basically treating one half at a time. After rinsing off with the hose I then treated them the same way with the alodine.

After the tubes had completely dried off I then taped up one end of each, mixed up some primer, and poured it inside. I then taped off the other end of each and gently rocked the tubes back and forth, each time turning them a bit as well. Once I was sure the inside was fully coated throughout, I then took the tape off one end, emptied out the excess primer, and hung them up to drip-dry.

I'll finish these off tomorrow once the paint has properly dried.
