Brief Description:  Horizontal Stabiliser Tips

I started off today by enlisting the help of work mate, Peter Tegen, to help me hang the elevators to the horizontal stabiliser. This is definitely a two man job...one to hold the elevator in position, the second to insert the hinge bolts.

Once hung, I could then drill the centre hinge bolt holes in the elevator control horns, one elevator at a time. I followed Vans instructions and used a short section of 1/4" steel tube inserted into the hinge bearing as a guide for drilling the holes. This worked very well, and both elevators move freely, with no binding.

I left the elevators in place and then moved on to trimming and fitting the small horizontal stabliser tips. I thought this would be best done with the elevators in place so that I could get a proper alignment between the two.

The fibreglass HS tips need to be trimmed to match the curvature of the elevator tips, and the instructions give absolutely no advice on how to do this at all. I spent ages with a marker pen, my dremel, and a sanding block, and in the end I'm happy with the result.

I also found that the small HS tips stuck out further than the elevator tips. It was only about 5 millimetres, but it did not look good. Using my hot air gun I managed to reshape the fibreglass stabiliser tips enough to create a good alignment.

Next I need to fill the rearward facing opening with balsa wood and filler, but that's a job for next time.
