For all my aviator friends I thought you might be interested in a user report on a product I recently purchased. I have three standard Peltor 7004 passive noise reduction headsets in my Archer. I recently had a problem with one of the headsets and convinced myself that the right side speaker was failing. Turns out there really was no problem but that's another story. Anyway, I got on-line and started looking for repair services or maybe a replacement speaker. While searching I came across a company named Headsets Inc. Now you guys (and gals) may know about this but I certainly did not. This company makes conversion kits to modify all the best known headset brands from passive to active noise reduction.
The kits include two new ANR modules (left & right), new cables with plugs, new cross-over cable, cable ties, heat shrink tubing, spare 24 gauge wire, rosin core solder, and new gel ear seals, 9V battery pack, some new felt pads for inside the ANR modules, and a good set of instructions. Basically, you get everything new except the actual ear cups and the headband.
I installed the ANR modules, spliced in and soldered the new wiring, and reassembled the sets with new gel seals. The basic kit for the Peltor 7004 was $189 and to that I added an upgraded AMP cable with plugs, a battery pack with an auto-shutoff, and a little cordura case for the battery pack. My total price for my new ANR headset was $240 including Fedex shipping. As I said, you may already be up to speed on this product but I am impressed. Oh, they also make a neat little power cable set-up that allows you to power the sets from the aircraft battery (not thru a cigarette lighter/power outlet). Looks to be perfect for an RV-8.
