Brief Description:  Begin work on left fuel tank

Once the primer on the Z brackets was dry, I bolted them to the main spar per the plans and instructions. The tank baffle was clecoed to the forward side of the spar and the position of the Z brackets was checked. All brackets except the most outboard one were perfect. The baffle pilot hole on the outboard bracket was slightly off but will be ok once riveted.

The inboard bracket was inserted between the spar and baffle and checked for alignment. The bracket was back drilled using the three holes in the spar as guides. Three platenuts were installed on the aft side of the spar with the appropriate flush rivets. The final bracket was then bolted into place.

The tank skin was test fitted by clecoing it along the spar (both sides) and along the tank baffle. All the seams where the skins come together were checked for fit. All the edges came together with little or no gap. Once all the edges are deburred and smoothed there should be just a little clearance between the skins. There was a slight (1/32") gap where the extreme leading edge of the tank skin butts to the outboard leading edge skin (at the joint plate) but this may decrease a little when the tank ribs are inserted. I expect the skin to move a little as it is pulled down against the tank ribs.

I also have 2-3 ribs that have a gap between the rib flange and skin (always at the nose). This is going to require some adjustment to the rib, some shimming or perhaps some of both.
