Brief Description:  NMUSAF Volunteer

When not working on the RV-8 project, boring holes in the sky, or working around the house, you will usually find me at the National Museum of the USAF. Upon retirement, I applied for a volunteer position at the Museum and have been there ever since. There are numerous volunteer opportunities at the Museum including hangar monitor, lobby information desk, annex shuttle registration, Friend’s membership desk, IMAX theatre, computer and administrative assistant, education program assistant, and tour guide. There are also some technical positions including restoration shop technician and research division volunteer. Some positions require both Museum experience and extensive specialized knowledge but most do not require prior experience.

My first assignment at the Museum was hosting visitors inside the various aircraft hangars and providing artifact, historical and general museum information, surveillance and safety for the visitors. In recent years, however, I have taken advantage of additional training opportunities and become a docent hosting both Restoration Shop and Air Force Heritage Tours. Like the other docents, I enjoy hosting tours for both our regular visitors and the occasional special group. I have to admit, however, my favorite job is taking visitors through the restoration workshops and showing them some of the project work underway. As you might imagine, building the RV-8 has given me a special appreciation for the work of the technicians in the workshops.

If you have an interest in aviation or history and live within traveling distance of Wright Patterson, you might consider volunteer service at the Museum. I highly recommend the experience. As a volunteer you will work with a great bunch of people and have the opportunity to meet visitors from around our country and the world. If you love airplanes, history and the U.S. armed forces, there is no better place to be. Check out the volunteer opportunities at www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/volunteer.
