Brief Description:  Sheet Metal Tools & RV-8 Empennage Kit

In December 2006 after viewing the EAA "From the Ground Up" series a couple times, I decided to acquire additional instructional videos specific to Van's RV-8 aircraft. Two DVDs produced by GeoBeck Inc. were purchased from Van's Aircraft. The first concentrated on aircraft sheet metal tools and their use. It covers the basic tools and standard workshop practices related to sheet metal fabrication (measuring, marking, cutting, drilling, deburring, dimpling, riveting, etc.). It provides a good overview of the basic skills required.

I also purchased the two DVD set on empennage construction for the RV-8. While the video is not completely up to date regarding the RV-8 prepunched tail kit, it gives a reasonably detailed look at how to build the tail components. The challenge for GeoBeck's video production is the constant improvements made by Van's which make workshop procedures simpler. For example, the GeoBeck video shows how to construct a jig for assembling the horizontal stabilizer. With the current prepunched kit, however, a straight and true stabilizer can be built without a jig.

Having said that, the builder may still want to build the jig to hold the assembly while it is being worked. In my case, I didn't build a jig as described in the video but did construct a floor-standing rack to hold the horizontal and later the vertical stabilizer to make final riveting easier.

I found the videos informative and helpful. However, the builder must recognize and adapt to procedural changes dictated by on-going improvements in the kits. Follow the factory directions and use the videos as an additional reference resource.
