Brief Description:  Fabricate & install exhaust pipe brackets - Part 1

The instructions for fabricating and installing the exhaust pipe brackets from Vetterman had two alternatives for the vertical support. The components supplied were not near long enough for attaching the pipes to the back of the engine sump so I briefly considered attaching the pipes to the engine mount (option 2 in the instructions). After talking to another builder I discarded that idea.

The only way to attach the brackets to the engine sump was to either use the fuel line to extend the length or somehow lengthen the bracket tubes. I decided to lengthen the tubes. I accomplished the redesign by "splicing" the steel tube from Vetterman to a length of copper tubing purchased from the local hardware store. The splice was simple. I took a piece of threaded rod 1.5" in length and screwed .75" down into the steel tube and the other end into the copper tube. The copper tube was then cut to give me about a .25" gap between the upper and lower bracket tubes. The assembly was completed per the Vetterman instructions.

I had to put some slight bends in the ends of the tubes and the ear on the bracket that goes around the pipes so everything would match up nicely. In the end, I was able to get a good solid (but flexible) support for the pipes and not interfere with the motor mount frame.
