Brief Description:  Clear coated instrument panel (disaster)

The shop was warm enough for painting so I thought it would be a good time to apply the clear coat on the various cockpit panels that were lettered recently. I had previously tested the paint, lettering, and clear coat on some scrap pieces of aluminum so expected no problems. In all my prior tests the results were fine.

This time, however, when it really counted the clear coat paint softened and wrinkled the color coat. You can see the damage in the photo below. The wrinkling occurred in three different spots on the panels and only on the beige color. Needless to say, I was not very happy.

I had to strip the paint down to the bare metal, prime, and repaint the color coat. After a couple days to cure, I applied new lettering and set the panel aside to cure some more. I also prepared another test piece for further testing to determine what went wrong. Frankly, I am afraid to paint the last two panels for fear of more wrinkling. All my panels that were painted in green came out just fine. The green paint, by the way, was the same type as the beige but in a satin finish rather than gloss. The clear coat is also satin.
