Brief Description:  Fabricate battery access panel

After exchanging email with Danny King (RV-8 Beautiful Doll) and reviewing some forum posts, I decided to fabricate an access panel in the rear baggage compartment to facilitate easy access to the rear mounted battery and the area in and around the elevator bellcrank.

As mentioned in an earlier log entry, I had a hard time finding some suitable latches. I eventually ordered a couple miniature paddle latches (Southco brand) on-line. I have included a picture of the latches below. They seem to be sturdy (made of stainless steel and plastic) and are the perfect size.

I have included a picture of the rear baggage sheet metal with the access hole cut and a reinforcement plate clecoed around the edge of the panel hole. The reinforcement plate is cut from some .040 scrap which stiffens the baggage deck significantly. I don't think any additional stiffeners will be required under the deck. The reinforcement plate serves as a "ledge" that the access panel will rest upon when latched into place. The access panel will sets flush with the deck.
