Brief Description:  Workshop preventative maintenance

Knowing I didn't have enough 1/8" clecos to accomplish much in the shop today, I turned my attention to some routine preventative and corrective maintenance. The first item on the agenda was to drain the compressor tank. I really need to drain the tank more often, probably every morning before beginning work. There is always water in the tank. I assume the high humidity in Ohio and the natural condensing effect of compressing air results in the moisture. It can't be good for the air tools even with routine oiling. I need to find some way of filtering the moisture. My dirt/moisture filter from Harbor Freight just doesn't have much, if any, effect.

Speaking of Harbor Freight, my next task was to repair my filter/regulator for the second time. A few months ago, the internal diaphram corroded and became stuck rendering the regulator inop. This time the adjuster mechanism (large T-shaped screw) became stuck. when disassembled I found that one of the threads was galled making it extremely hard to adjust. I cleaned up the threads with a tap and file/wire brush, lubed the screw and diaphram, and reassembled. Regulator is working again but who knows for how long. I wouldn't recommend this Harbor Freight product. I don't think it effectively filters anything though it does provide regulation when it works.

The last maintenance task for the day was a general cleaning of the space, recovering the workbench with some fresh protective paper, and pulling the parts for the tail cone.
