Brief Description:  Redesign of vertical stabilizer

The original rv-3 vertical stabilizer was installed on the aft fuselage. However, the root of the stab was not as wide as the support structure it was mounted to. This would have created a nightmare to build a fairing and would have still created buffeting and turbulence as the air flow seperated from the vertical stab before reaching the rudder surface. I was concearned that this could possible induce flutter to the yaw access. I have redesigned the vertical stabilizer to accomodate the width of the support structure it is mounted to providing a more natural slipstream for the air to transition off the vertical stab and onto the rudder.

Research regarding the sizing of the vertical stabilizer surface revealed that there is a large "window" regarding the total area in relation to the wing size and location relative to the wing. Using available formulas, it was determined that both the vertical stabilizer/rudder and elevons are within the envelope for acceptable stability and performance.
