Brief Description: Right Elevator Skin Back Riveting
In this log entry I recorded back riveting the skin stiffeners to the right elevator skin.
I began the work by building an improved table to backrivet using the C-Frame dimpler. I've had outstanding success back riveting with the C-Frame because it keeps the rivet gun perpendicular to the skin. However, I noticed that using my original table the back rivet plate was moving during riveting. To stop this I created a new table where the back rivet plate would be set into top, keeping it from moving as riveting was taking place. Then I used the two tables in concert, one to support the skin and the second to back rivet the stiffeners.
By flexing the skin back, further opening the angle, I was able to successfully back rivet the skin stiffeners to the skin using AN426AD3-3.5 rivets. I removed a few rivets that were proud due to the flexing of the skin due at the aft edge (closest to the fold). To counter this, I carefully bent back the skin more, and used increased pressure on the skin so that it sat flat on the back rivet plate under the C-Frame.
