Brief Description:  Rear and Fwd Spar Work

Today I double checcked and completed the measurement and marking of the HS-710 and HS-714 angle stock for cutting. I spent a good amount of today reviewing the instructions and double checking a lot of my previous work. As a new builder I am anxious of the quality of my own work to date. I also went through and upsized all the of the required holes in the Rear Spar and Spar Reinforcement Bars up to a #21 drill bit as called for in the plans (Drawing #3).

I also began trimming the HS-702 Forward Spar to accomodate the Spar Reinforcement Modifications. The instructions called for trimming, rounding the edges, marking and drilling relief holes, and finally rounding out the edges. I marked and cut the HS-702 and then stopped when I sensed that I was possibly messing the piece up.

To alleviate my concerns I decided to phone Vans, send them the pictures and talk about my work thus far. The best image #2, showed that I was possibly over filing the corner, and I would end up removing too much of the HS-702 flange.

When I called Vans and asked how to alleviate cracks that developed in the spar flange while cutting out the relief areas. Told to file down the cracks and build on. The cracks developed from the cutting action in the aluminum snips, alleviated with filing them out. See Email...

I also used a dead blow hammer and a wooden block to open out the cut flange and smooth the material down as directed on Drawing #3.
