Brief Description: Fitting Fuel Tank Z-Brackets
|
|
In this work session, I worked on finishing out the fuel tank z-brackets in preparation for fitting the fuel tank to the spar and drilling the holes in the upper flange of the z-brackets and the fuel tank rear baffle.
At the end of the previous work session I had primed the z-brackets in preparation for drilling, So in this work session, I used the pneumatic rivet squeezer to attach the nut plates to the twelve z-brackets requiring them. Next I match driled, countersunk, and then primed the holes in the spar webbing for the three nut plates on each spar for the inner-most z-bracket.
After allowing the primer to dry for a few hours, I riveted the the three nutplates in the spar web of each spar. Getting the rivets in the awkward position was quite a chore. It took over an hour and a holf to set the twelve rivets. I elected to rivet slowly, a few softer hits at a time with my smallest tungsten bucking bar to work the rivets into good shop heads. I only had to drillout and reset one rivet, and was able to do that without damaging the rivet hole. The rivets weren't flawless, but they were good.
Lastly, I installed the z-brackets onto the spar web using the supplied AN3A bolts. I did not attempt a final installation, as it is not close to time yet, so I skipped installing the washers, and only torqued the the brackets flush with the spar web, and not to a specific torque. The nut plates and bolts are pretty tight, so it took a fair bit of muscle to get the bolts into position.
