Brief Description:  Wing Tie Down Brackets

I worked on fitting the wing tie down brackets to the main spar. the first hurdle to this project was, figuring the correct drill bit to accomodate the AN3 (-6A, and -7A) bolts. the 3/16" hole depicted on the plans left the hole the exact same size as the bolts. After talking with Van's they informed that #1 yes, this is correct, and #2 I would need to step up to a #10 drill bit to make the hole the proper size.

After discovering the proper size drill bit, I aligned the pieces, taping the spacers into position and using 2x4 blocks and C-clamps, held the AEX in position, then went about drilling the holes through the guide hole in the spar and through the Aluminum stock. It was a pretty tense exercise, I had to move pieces around the garage to get the correct working space to proerly drill the holes.

After drilling the bolt holes I disassembled all the parts and cleaned out the aluminum shavings, and finally deburred the drill holes. I then used spare bolts, cleco clips and plate nuts to drill the platenut holes for the inner 4 bolts.

After that I countersunk the 16 holes in the spacers for the AD3 rivet heads to sit flush with the spacers. While doing this one of the first holes I countersunk was found to be a bit too deep. I think this was becasue the drill was not vertical when I ran the countersink. Thus I had to reach back into the parts bin and find the 5th spacer that I had cut and remake the spacer, sand down all the cut edges (see earlier post about this) and properly counter sink the rivets. I used a lot more caution this time as I didn't want to mess my last spacer up.

I wonder what that extra material was for, I keep looking in the plans but cannot find out where it was to be used. I bet I'll be ordering replacement material from Vans in the near future...
