Brief Description:  Trimming Rear Spar Reinforcement Plates

I took a break from working on the wing countersinks while I sorted out the correct way to countersink the #8 screw dimples. I decided to dedicate a my shop time today to trimming the rear spar reinforcement plates.

To accomplish this I had to do a little innovating. I tried to make marks on the plates themselves but this quickly got cumbersome. Instead I marked the work bench (with pencil, but then it wouldn't erase, lesson learned), and used the guide lines to make my marks. First I did the vertical lines, then I went back and did the horizontal lines. After cutting, these lines helped me check over my work easily.

To cut the reincorcement plates I opted to use the hacksaw and bench vise, with the pieces held between scrop 2x4's. I could have used the band saw, but I've slowed in using it after the first aluminum blade wore out and finding a suitible replacement proved time consuming and costly ($15
). I have a good number of hacksaw blades that have spent a majority of their lives unsed (for over a decade now).

The cuts were easy enough, I simply offset about 1/8" - 1/16" from the maked line. Then after completing the cuts, I finished the trimming by using the circular head of the bench sander. I tried the 1" belt sander but learned that a larger sanding head made straighter lines...

After grinding down the edges to the appropriate lengths, I then used emory cloth, 400 grit wet sandpaper, and a 1.5" scotch brite wheel on my die grinder to smooth and debur all the edges of all four reinforcement plates.
