Brief Description: Riveting Empennage Components
|
|
After months of work, today was my first day riveting parts together.
I started by riveting the HS-411PP to the VA-146. This was my first day riveting for keeps, so to say I was apprehensive is an understatement! I learned a lot about riveting. there are a few variables to getting good rivets. And admittedly, most of my work on this day was acceptable but not altogether exceptional.
I began the day working on the practice kit to get familiar again with the pneumatic squeezer. I learned though, that setting up the pneumatic squeezer for AN470AD4-4 rivets doesn't accurately set up the squeezer for the next size up rivets AN470AD4-5 rivets, which were used on the HS-411PP. I also used a hand squeezer to help properly set the rivets.
The rivets on the HS-411PP went in well. two of the rivets did not end up with completely perfect flat heads, and the heads were very slightly angled, however I assesed that removing the two rivets would be too conservative a step to make. the rivets were squeezed well, and are within tolerances. Just not perfect.
Next I moved onto the HS-603 and worked on riveting it to the HS-609. Again I worked through some challenges getting the pneumatic squeezer set up properly. On my first attmepts, I was consistently under squeezing the rivets, and some were not set as well as directed. As such I removed two rivets, and also used the hand squeezer to get the rivets shop heads set to the correct sizes.
